What is the Order of the Eastern Star?

The members of the Order of the Eastern Star are dedicated men and women who sincerely reflect the spirit of fraternal love and the desire to work together for good by giving their time to meaningful projects that benefit mankind.

We are the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both women and men can belong. With Chapters in almost all 50 states and in 27 countries around the world, members can go anywhere and know that they can find friends and a helpful hand when they are in need

Our members are encouraged to help one another and to reach out to their communities. Members are active in many community-based projects that provide for those requiring assistance.

The members of our Order reflect the social, cultural, educational, ethnic, and religious diversity of the community around them. We value each other’s strengths and opinions.

As an organization, we raise funds to aid our members in need. We support cancer and heart research, provide college/university scholarships for students regardless of age or membership status, and financially support many other charities. We fund and operate a Senior Living Community for our older members who belong to Indiana Chapters.

OES Origins

The origins of the Order of the Eastern Star dates back to the mid-19th century. Dr. Rob Morris was a Freemason, Master Mason and Poet Laureate of Masonry, who made it his mission to share the principles of Masonry with women. He and his wife, Charlotte Mendenhall Morris, developed the concepts and beliefs that formed the foundation for the Order of the Eastern Star.
